Recycled PET flakes: demand from sheet continues to increase

Since the outbreak of Russia-Ukraine war, international oil prices have been constantly rising. Virgin polyester product prices follow up continually promoted by costs, to reach a three-year high. PET bottle chip prices once hit 9,000yuan/mt, SD PET fiber chip prices reach 7,800-7,900yuan/mt, and bright PET fiber chip prices climb up to 7,900-8,000yuan/mt.   For recycled PET flakes, recycling volumes reduce apparently compared with the same period of previous years, as the consumption of drinking water and soft drinks decreases impacted by the multiple outbreaks of epidemic in China, but recycled chemical fiber prices fail to improve with higher virgin polyester market, and recycled chemical fiber plants are dull to purchase feedstock at higher level, which restrains the PET flakes prices. PET flake prices rise limitedly. Recently, hot washed blue and white flakes for HC re-PSF in Zhejiang and Jiangsu are mainly at 5,900-6,000yuan/mt, after-tax delivered.   In recent two years, PET sheet production lines in China has expanded largely. With higher PET fiber chip and PET bottle chip, the feedstock costs for sheet plants climb up, and recycled PET flakes become good alternative to reduce costs. For sheet with conventional quality, they require not high quality for PET flakes, with slightly better quality than flakes for HC re-PSF. Sheet plants can accept higher prices. Recently, hot washed blue and white flakes for sheet are at 6,500-7,000yuan/mt, after-tax ex-works, obviously higher than the prices sold to recycled chemical fiber plants, but this price is still lower about 1,000-1,500yuan/mt and 2,000-2,500yuan/mt compared with PET fiber chip and PET bottle chip. Therefore, during the sheet production, adding certain quantity of recycled PET flakes can reduce the costs obviously on the premise of product quality.   For late market, oil prices may maintain high, and PET fiber chip and PET bottle chip prices may remain firm. For cleaning plants, they may turn to produce PET flakes for sheet under the lure of higher profits. In short, PET flakes prices are likely to be easy to rise, but hard to decline. Re-PSF market is sluggish overall, and with tight cash flow, they may not accept high prices. Conventional PET flakes prices may fluctuate narrowly overall.
