China's first large tow carbon fiber production line has mechanical completion

It was learned from the Sinopec Information Office that Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical Corporation's first set of large tow carbon fiber production line saw mechanical completion in China. Sinopec is the first company in China and the fourth in the world to master the production technology of large tow carbon fiber. This mechanical completion means that the installation of the project equipment has been completed, which is a key step for the next stage of trial production. All equipment of the first stage of the project realizes localization. In the carbon fiber industry, at present, each bundle of carbon fiber is basically between 1000 and 12000, which is called small tow; usually the number of carbon fiber per bundle is more than 48000 (48K for short) is called large tow carbon fiber. The biggest advantage of 48K large tow is that under the same production conditions, it can greatly improve the single-line production capacity and quality performance of carbon fiber, and achieve low production cost, thus breaking the application limitations brought by the high price of carbon fiber. The large tow carbon fiber produced by Sinopec is a new high-strength fiber material with a carbon content of more than 95%. It can be widely used in aircraft parts, rail transit raw materials, car body manufacturing and so on.   Carbon fiber technology has strict technical barriers, which are only owned and mastered by a few developed countries such as Japan, the United States and so on. Sinopec, together with a number of universities, scientific research institutes and enterprises, made a major breakthrough in 2018 and successfully trial-produced 48K large tow carbon fiber, which runs through the whole process. At present, Sinopec carbon fiber technology has its own intellectual property rights, with a total of 274 patents and 165 authorizations, ranking first in China and third in the world.
